Explore beyond Bora Bora with this 6 day trip to Fakarava Island, set in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. The island’s rich ecosystem shelters many rare birds, plants and crustaceans and Fakarava diving offers fantastic destinations with sites that are virtually undiscovered. Staying in authentic, local pensions, you can relax in French Polynesia’s second largest lagoon, explore quaint villages and old coral churches and get to know the welcoming locals.  We think this lesser-known French Polynesian island will soon become a favourite!

    Day 1: Arrive Papeete

On arrival into Papeete Airport you will be met by a local representative and shown to your connecting domestic flight.

A short hour long flight will take you to the small island of Fakarava, a driver will meet you and drive you to your accommodation, and your home for the next 5 nights.

    Days 2-5: Fakarava

Located right on the beach, your lodge accommodation offers tropical gardens and 2 on-site restaurants. Half board is included as standard, meaning you have both breakfast and dinner included. The bungalows are simple and clean, each with a private bathroom and air conditioning.

Fakarava is one of the world’s best diving destinations with two main passes feeding into the lagoon, the Tumakohua Pass is home to an underwater valley known as Shark’s Hole, which is heavily populated with lemon, whitecap and hammerhead sharks, making this a popular choice for divers. Back on dry land you can take a leisurely bike ride to the main village of Rotoava, located on the longest continuous ‘motu’ (islet) in French Polynesia, rimmed with extraordinary beaches. Or, head to far southern end of the lagoon to find a vintage Catholic church made entirely out of coral, in the village of Tetamanu.

With a distinct absence of large resort style hotels this island offers pure surroundings and a secluded island feel that sets it apart from the more popular islands in French Polynesia.

    Day 6: Depart Fakarava

You will be collected from your hotel today and driven to the airport for your domestic flight back to Papeete.

    Your domestic flight is included.

    What's included
    • Meet & greet at Papeete Airport
    • Return domestic flights from Papeete
    • 5 nights’ accommodation
    • Return shared transfers in Fakarava
    • Daily half board

The best time to visit French Polynesia is the dry winter period between May & October, the weather is cooler and rainfall is much less. From November to April temperatures rise as the summer rainy season begins bringing humid, cloudy weather and lots of rain. During this time is not uncommon to experience brief, violent storms or torrential rains lasting a few days at a time. Peak season is July and August, Christmas and Easter school holidays meaning prices at this time will be at a premium.
