Day 1: Arrive in La Paz
On arrival in La Paz, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, leaving the rest of the day to acclimatise in the highest capital in the world.
Day 2: Tiwanaku/Huatajata
This morning you’ll begin your tour through Bolivia by visiting the Tiwanaku Ruins, the remains of one of the oldest civilisations in the Americas. Explore the Sun Gate, the Temple of Kalasasaya and the Pyramid of Akapana; magnificent architecture from this once great agricultural civilisation. In the afternoon, you’ll transfer to Huatajata, where you’ll visit the Andean Roots Eco Village and explore the Altiplano Museum, Mud Igoos and the Handicrafts village before meeting a kallawaya, the natural healers of Bolivia. End the day with a candlelit dinner and stargazing at the Native Observatory.
Day 3: Huatajata & Lake Titicaca
After breakfast you’ll take the Hydrofoil across to Copacabana and visit the famous 16th century shrine “Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana”. Next you’ll head out onto Lake Titicaca to explore the Grand Stairs and Sacred Fountain of Sun Island – drinking the water is believed to give eternal youth and happiness. After lunch at the Uma Kollu Archaeological Restaurant you’ll head over to Moon Island to explore the beautiful Sun Virgins Temple before returning to Huatajata and transferring by bus to La Paz, where the road snakes alongside the spine of the Andes towards the capital.
Day 4: Uyuni
This morning you’ll fly south from La Paz to the town of Uyuni, close to the famous salt flats. Don’t worry, you’ll have time to see La Paz later in the trip but for now you’ll arrive in Uyuni and immediately start an excursion to the Salt Lake and Isla Pescado. Uyuni is the largest salt flat on the earth, located high on the Bolivian Altiplano, where the surreal pentagons of crystalline salt combine with the blue sky, green lagoons and clouds of pink flamingos to make up one of the most interesting landscapes on earth. You’ll have lunch at Isla Pescado, an oasis of fossils and cacti in the centre of the salt flats, some over 100 years old. Snap some cool photos before checking in to your unique salt hotel on the shores of the lake.
Day 5: Uyuni
After breakfast you’ll enjoy a full day excursion to the village of Tahua, at the foot of Thunupa Volcano. Hike up to the cave of the Coquesa Mummies and enjoy the view over the glistening salt flats. A box lunch is provided, after which you will return to the hotel in Uyuni with the rest of the afternoon at your leisure.
Day 6: Uyuni to La Paz
In the morning you’ll fly back to La Paz and embark on a tour of the city and the nearby Moon Valley. Experience the pre colonial history of La Paz as well as the traditional architecture that the Spanish empire brought to the region. Wander through the indigenous, colonial and modern areas taking in the sights like the Witch Doctors market, all the while framed by the Illimani mountain that overlooks the city. Later, you’ll visit the Moon Valley, a surreal clay formation that whose craters and peaks resemble the face of the moon.
Day 7: La Paz to Rurrenabaque
Today is a travel day – you’ll be transferred to the airport to fly to Rurrenabaque where you’ll stay overnight, ready to begin your Amazon adventure tomorrow!
Day 8: Rurrenabaque to Chalalan
Early this morning you’ll take a boat trip along the Beni River to Chalalan before hiking from the river to Chalalan Lodge where you’ll be staying for 2 nights. Spend the afternoon relaxing, perhaps taking a swim in the lake before having a briefing about the Madidi National Park and dinner. In the evening you’ll embark on a night time walk to appreciate the chirping and humming of the rainforest – spot tiny frogs, birds and other nocturnal animals that prowl through the trees at night.
Day 9: Chalalan
After breakfast it’s time to explore this tropical haven! Hike along the banks of the Silvador and Jaguar rivers, spotting medicinal herbs and exotic plants along the way. Perhaps take a canoe out onto Chalalan Lake where you can soak up the wild beauty of the area before trekking the Wichi trail underneath the thick lush canopy. Spot colourful birds all day, from swooping scarlet macaws to quick-as-a-flash hummingbirds, before coming together at dinner to discuss the wonderful day you’ve had.
Day 10: Chalalan to Rurrenabaque to La Paz
After a final breakfast in the Amazon you’ll hike back down to the river before catching the boat along the serene river to Rurrenabaque. On arrival y ou’ll be transferred to the airport for the short flight to La Paz where you can enjoy your final day in Bolivia, perhaps visiting the markets to pick up some last minute souvenirs!
Day 11: La Paz
It’s time to leave Bolivia – you’ll be transferred to the airport after breakfast with plenty of time before your onwards flight.
