Spend a few days exploring Tanna, where you’ll hike to the rim of Mount Yasur to see bubbling lava and visit local villages to learn about Melanesian traditions. Depart the UK from your chosen airport.
On arrival in Fiji you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel for a one night stay.
After breakfast, you’ll be driven back to the airport for your short flight to Vanuatu. On arrival, you’ll be driven to your hotel, checking in for three nights.
Enjoy a free day in Efate – you can choose to do as much or as little as you like. It’s the perfect place to relax by the pool, swim in the ocean or sunbath in the warm tropical air but if you want to explore further, there is plenty to do. We can book you a day tour to Lelepa Island, where you can swim with colourful fish and visit the caves to hear stories of local history. Back on the main island you could visit the local market in Port Vila and browse the fresh food and unique hand-carved souvenirs to take home.
Today you’ll be taken on a day tour to Pentecost Island*, starting with a scenic flight 200km north. This lush and green island is full of waterfalls and hills, and is where every year the villagers of Southwest Pentecost perform a ritual called Naghol, or land-diving. Said to bring a bountiful yam harvest, these brave young men leap from the hand-built towers with vines tied to their ankles to break their fall. This unique and spectacular event is said to have inspired AJ Hackett to invent bungee jumping in New Zealand!
*this tour only operates between April and June, during the Naghol Land Diving Festival.
After breakfast, you’ll be driven to the airport for the short flight to Tanna Island. You’ll be staying at the lovely White Grass Resort, so why not spend the afternoon relaxing by the beach or head to the spa for a massage?
On your first day in Tanna, you’ll head off on a half day tour of the island. Visit the local coffee hulling plant, the home of Tanna organic coffee, with a strong cup of coffee to wake you up! You’ll then visit the main townships of Lenakel and Isangel, to see the Supreme Court Building, the police station and the government offices. Stop in to marvel at the largest banyan tree every recorded and enjoy a drive along the west coast on your way back to the hotel.
On your second day you’ll enjoy the Mount Yasur Volcano Safari. You’ll be driven by 4WD to the far side of Tanna, through a mountainous region known as Middle Bush. Wild horses roam the plains, with coffee plantations and remote villages dotting the landscape as you get close to the distant volcano and Tanna’s east coast, with its rugged black sand beaches. Arriving at the volcano entrance, you’ll be greeted by the local guides and go through a safety briefing before the drive over the ashy landscape towards the volcano. You’ll then embark on a short, steep, 10-minute walk to the rim of the crater, where you’ll experience the bubbling, orange lava inside Mount Yasur. The tour departs in the midafternoon, to ensure you arrive at the volcano to see the sun set and watch the molten lava light up the night sky.
This morning you’ll be taken back to the airport for your flight back to Efate, to enjoy your last relaxing night in Vanuatu. Why not spend the afternoon snorkelling in the clear water looking at the colourful fish or simply relaxing with a good book by the pool.
After breakfast, you’ll be driven back to the airport for your short flight to Fiji. ON arrival, you’ll be driven down to the Coral Coast, on the south coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island.
Chill out on the relaxing beaches of the Coral Coast on Fiji’s main island. We’ve left your time here free so you can swim in the pool, sip cocktails on your beach lounger and stroll along the beach at sunset. If you want to explore a little further, there are lots of areas to explore nearby, including a jet-boat trip along the Sigatoka River and a visit to the local village for a kava ceremony, or a hiking tour into the interior of the island. If you want to go further afield and extend your time in Fiji, just ask! We can add a visit to the heavenly Mamanuca Islands or even a flight up to Vanua Levu to dive on the Rainbow Reef.
This morning, you’ll be driven back to the airport for your flight home.
Vanuatu’s climate is influenced by the trade winds with different climates in different sections of the archipelago. The northern islands nearer the equator, including Pentecost and Espiritu Santo, remain hot with tropical rain all year round, while the central and southern islands including Tanna and Port Vila are more seasonal. From December to March the warm and wet season arrives, before the cool and drier season from May to October.
