Visit Robben Island to learn more about where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, or take the cable car up Table Mountain for wonderful views across the city and beyond. Leaving the city, the winelands offer fantastic wine tastings and some of the best food in South Africa. The next part of your trip takes you east along the coast to Knysna for 2 nights of relaxation overlooking the lagoon and a final night in Port Elizabeth, before heading to Australia.

Make the most of your stay in vibrant Cape Town

Why not add a safari lodge stay into your South African adventure? Here are some ideas, or you can speak to a consultant who will be happy to make some suggestions:

Days 11-17: Sydney & Surrounds

Once you reach Australia, our 7 day Sydney, Blue Mountains & Hunter Valley self-drive gives you 4 days to explore this iconic city, before taking a short self-drive adventure into the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley. With the freedom to explore at your own pace, you’ll cover 3 of the main highlights in this region.

Explore this vibrant city and don’t miss Darling Harbour, Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach. After a few days, pick up your hire car and head into the Blue Mountains, so-named for the bluish haze that blankets the hills from the many eucalyptus trees. From here, visit the wineries of the Hunter Valley for a day’s wine tasting in this well-known wine region.

Catch some sun or learn to surf at Bondi beach

If you’d like to extend your stay in Australia, we will create the perfect itinerary. Here are some more Australia trip ideas:

Days 18-26: Classic New Zealand wine trail

Your self-drive adventure along New Zealand’s wine trail begins with a stay in Auckland before introducing you to the cultural heart of New Zealand. You’ll pass through Rotorua (home of the Hangi feast) before reaching Napier and Hawke’s Bay, an area renowned for its gourmet food, world-class wineries and art-deco architecture. Journey on to the Wairarpa wine region with its lush landscapes and charming boutique wineries. Continuing to the Marlborough Region at the tip of the South Island, where you’ll encounter yet more spectacular scenery and arguably the best wineries in all of New Zealand. Enjoy local wines and sumptuous seafood on your relaxing cruise through the Sounds. Finally, you’ll head down to Blenheim through a rich patchwork of farming land to reach the capital of South Island, Christchurch, to end your New Zealand road trip.

If you have more time to spend here, why not add in an extra special destination and fly over to Easter Island, home to the carved rock Moai Statues? We can easily arrange a side trip to this fascinating island from Santiago!

Days 30-36: Essential Peru in a week

From Chile, you’ll continue on to Peru for a week, home to the ancient Inca citadel, Machu Picchu. Beginning in Lima, we’ve included 2 days in the Peruvian capital for you to explore the colonial architecture and up-coming local culinary scene before heading to Cusco. Here you can visit the Temple of the Sun, an example of ancient Incan Architecture. The Sacred Valley is next, with a visit to the Awanacancha llama centre where you can learn about the importance of llamas and alpacas to the Peruvian way of life.

The next two days are all about Machu Picchu! You’ll make your way to the ancient site by train (rather than trekking, although we can organise this if you prefer). You’ll have plenty of opportunity to spend the whole day taking in the amazing views of this ancient city.
