Itinerary in brief:
- 3 nights San Francisco
- 14 nights Campervan Hire
- 3 nights Vancouver
Day 1: Depart UK
Depart the UK from your chosen airport. You’ll arrive in San Francisco later the same day and make your own way to the hotel, where you will check in for three nights.
Included: International flight, hotel
Days 2 & 3: San Francisco
Spend a couple of days exploring the city by the bay – take the tram down to Fisherman’s Wharf for a wander along Pier 39 or take the ferry to Alcatraz to learn about the famous island prison. Taste a fresh burrito in the Mission District and enjoy a picnic in Dolores Park where you can gaze at the skyscrapers of downtown in the distance. A great family activity is to rent some bikes and cycle over the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands for beautiful views across the bridge over the city. You’ll find history and culture here around every corner, whether you’re browsing through the shelves of City Lights Booksellers or snapping a picture of the famous ‘Painted Ladies’ – the row of pretty, painted Victorian houses beside Alamo Square Park – 2 days in San Francisco will fly by!
Days 4 - 17: Pick up your campervan
This morning you’ll pick up your campervan and start your journey north. You have 14 days to explore the Pacific Northwest so get on to Route 101 - head for northern California where you could stop at Redwood National Park for views of the famous trees – there’s even a tree so big you can drive through it! Other highlights of the region include the wineries of Grant’s Pass, the beautiful views over Crater Lake National Park and the meandering Columbia River in the shadow of Mount Hood.
Make sure you spend some time in Portland, where craft beer is king as well as days exploring the coastline around Cannon Beach, where jagged rocks stick out of the water and the beaches go on forever. Around Seattle you’ll come across a slew of national parks to stop in at before grabbing a coffee from the original Starbucks on your way up to Vancouver. Your family will love this whirlwind three weeks of exciting exploration in a beautiful region of the USA.
Included: Campervan hire
Day 18: Vancouver
This morning you’ll be arriving in Vancouver, so you’ll drop off your camper around noon and check into your hotel for three nights.
Included: Campervan hire, hotel
Days 19 & 20: Vancouver
Vancouver is a fresh outdoorsy city – no matter the weather you’ll want to get outside and explore. Start in Gastown, where you can roam the historic streets popping into tiny art galleries and boutique shops before moving on to Chinatown where you can introduce the kids to a delicious dim sum lunch. After taking in these two iconic neighbourhoods, head to Stanley Park for the afternoon – the best way to get around is cycling, so why not rent a bike head to see the colourful totem poles at Brockton Point or English Bay Beach to relax in the sun.
There are plenty of museums to enjoy if you are interested in the history of this region (the Museum of Anthropology is especially good for First Nations artefacts) or if you love food then head down to Granville Island Public Market, where you can browse the stalls, picking up all sorts of goodies from local BC cherries to fresh baked pastries. Getting out of the city here is easy – make sure you visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge as it hangs precariously over the river in the North Shore.
