Day 1: Arrive in Sydney
No trip to Australia is complete without a visit to the cosmopolitan city of Sydney. Arrive at your hostel at any time and check in for 3 nights.
The rest of your day is yours to explore! Why not wander through Hyde Park, see local wildlife at the Sydney Aquarium in Darling Harbour or simply enjoy a drink and soak up the view of the Sydney harbour by the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge, a perfect spot for relaxing after a long flight.
Day 2: Blue Mountains Tour
We’ve included a small group tour today to the spectacular Blue Mountains, the most frequented World Heritage Park in Australia. Follow your knowledgeable guide on a walk to Wentworth Falls, the Three Sisters Formation and Featherdale Wildlife Park where you can get up close and personal with some of Australia’s unique animals such as koalas and kangaroos. Visit a great viewpoint after your BBQ lunch and learn about the aboriginal legends of the area before being dropped back into the city.
Day 3: Sydney
With another day to experience the city, take a trip to one of Sydney’s famous beaches today. For those of you who are feeling particularly energetic you could walk the scenic coastal route from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach via many scenic coves where the blue waters crash against the jagged coastline. Alternatively, you could relax in the sun, try out surfing or meander around the many cafes.
Day 4: Sydney to Byron
Check out of your hostel and enjoy your last few hours in Sydney. Why not get out of the city and take a mere 30 minute ferry journey to the delightful laid back suburb of Manly for an escape from the hectic citylife. Meander around the market and excellent coffee shops it has to offer or many even hire a bike or rollerblades for the afternoon as a fun way to get around and explore the beachfront.
You will take the overnight Greyhound from Sydney to Byron Bay this evening.
Day 5: Byron Bay
One of the most popular places along the east coast, be it for the surf life, night life or general alternative hippie vibe, Byron Bay is not to be missed!
After checking in your hostel for 2 nights you could spend the afternoon soaking up some rays on the beach, indulging in some yoga or wandering around the maze of cafes and boutique shops. Why not hike to the lighthouse at the most easterly point of Australia for some great views back on the bustling beach and town.
Day 6: Byron Bay
Today you could you could indulge in one of the many activities available in Byron from learning to surf in some of the best waves in the world, whale watching or a day tour to the hippie town Nimbin. No visit to Byron is complete without a night out on the town in one of the many backpacker bars.
Day 7: Brisbane
Continue your journey onto Brisbane for 2 nights, the capital city of Queensland. Why not take the ferry along the river or simply stroll along the beautiful Southbank for great views of the city skyline. There are so many shops, bars and eateries that you will be spoilt for choice for dinner along the waterfront. If that doesn’t take your fancy, this artsy city has an abundance of museums, exhibitions and performances to watch.
Day 8: Brisbane
After breakfast you could catch the bus to Australia Zoo- one of the most famous zoos in the world set up by the popular TV personality Steve Irwin. It is home to a vast variety of different animals from birds, mammals and reptiles. Don’t forget to catch the Crocodile feeding show!
Day 9: Noosa Heads
Head to Noosa today - a small town with a vibrant atmosphere, idyllic beach and lush green scenery. Try your hand at the array of watersports on offer from paddle boarding or surfing here before heading to your hostel in preparation for your tour tomorrow.
Day 10: Noosa Everglades
An early start today as you embark on your 2 day self guided canoeing adventure! Take a boat transfer to pick up your canoe and briefing before you’re off navigating your own way upstream through the magnificent Everglades, an ancient UNESCO biosphere reserve that has existed unchanged for thousands of years. Arrive at your campsite and set up for a night in the midst of pure tranquillity.
Day 11: Noosa Everglades
Paddle upstream at your own pace deeper into the Everglades. This environmentally rich biosphere was recognized by UNESCO in 2007 for its diversity of plant and animal life. It contains 44% of all of Australia’s bird species, 1365 species of plants, 711 species of native fauna and 60 distinct eco-systems.
Relax in this amazing wilderness area before waving goodbye to our camp co- ordinator as you paddle back to the drop-off point for your return transfer back to Noosa or Rainbow Beach, arriving approx. 1:00pm
Day 12: Noosa Heads
Today is at leisure. Have a well-deserved relaxing evening at your hostel or with a drink in one of Noosa’s lively bars.
Day 13: Rainbow Beach
Head to Rainbow Beach today, the gateway to Fraser Island, and check into your hostel. You will have a briefing in the afternoon for your trip commencing the next day and the opportunity to meet your fellow tour buddies.
Day 14: Fraser Island
Make your way on the ferry to Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, in your 4 Wheel Drive after breakfast. Fraser Island is truly a place of exceptional beauty with long secluded white beaches, crisp lakes, rugged colourful sand cliffs and ancient rainforest. Visit the various crystal clear freshwater lakes the island has to offer such as Lake McKenzie and Basin Lake. Later you will learn about the island’s history and its native plants and wildlife in the sub-tropical rainforest at Central Station.
Day 15: Fraser Island
After breakfast at camp its time to head out onto Fraser Island, you may visit Eli Creek, the Maheno Shipwreck, the coloured sands at the Pinnacle, Indian Heads and the champagne pools.
After a day exploring you will find another beautiful spot to camp tonight.
Day 16: Rainbow Beach
Enjoy your final drive along the beach as you head for a swim in the emerald green Lake Wabby and clear blue Lake Birrabeen. Walk over Hammerstone Sandblow before returning on the ferry back to Rainbow Beach to reminisce over the last few days with your fellow travellers in the hostel bar.
Day 17: Rainbow Beach to Airlie Beach
Catch the overnight bus to Airlie Beach today after spending the day at your own leisure exploring the town.
Day 18: Airlie Beach
On arrival in Airlie Beach, check into your hostel and attend your briefing on your Whitsundays trip. Check out the lagoon by the beachfront to cool down and then spend the evening in this little beach town partying with other backpackers in one of the bustling bars.
Day 19: Whitsundays
Embark on a 3 Day 2 Night sailing adventure through the famous Whitsunday Islands. Some even claim them to be among the most beautiful islands in the world. Get to know your fellow shipmates and get involved with helping the crew on board as you cruise along to a secluded cove to enjoy your first spot of snorkelling in the perfect waters. You will get the chance to see coral reef, tropical fish and even turtles! The boat will anchor for the night in one of the coves where you will be rocked to sleep after dinner and drinks on board!
Day 20: Whitsundays
After more invigorating snorkelling in the morning, you can hike a guided bushwalk to an island lookout over Whitehaven Beach- a stunning beach with the world’s purest sand that really does epitomise paradise. Spend some free time on the beach strolling along the sand or bathing in the crystal water before heading back to the vessel.
Day 21: Airlie Beach
Enjoy a leisurely sail gazing out to sea back to Airlie Beach before checking into your hostel and enjoy your free time in this tropical town.
Day 22: Cairns
Journey to Cairns for your final 3 nights of this fantastic Australian adventure! This town is backpacker party central with something going on every night of the week. After proceeding to your hostel why not laze around the town’s lagoon pool during the day and end the night in one of the famous bars!
Day 23: Cairns
We’ve included a Great Barrier Reef trip aboard a catamaran today, a once in a lifetime experience you cannot afford to miss. Once you have been sailed out to sea you can snorkel or dive off the boat and experience the world’s largest coral reef in the flesh! Turtles, rays, clown fish and sharks are among some of the many varieties of sea life you will see close up.
Day 24: Cairns
Spend the day relaxing around the town after your action packed few weeks or alternatively you could opt to go on a trip inland to the lush rainforest such as the Atherton Tablelands or Cape Tribulation for more fantastic scenery, exotic waterfalls and native wildlife.
Day 25: Depart Cairns
Your trip up the east coast has unfortunately come to an end. Depart at any time today.
