Backpacking Australia

Australia is a classic destination on any backpacking trip with plenty of opportunity to explore far and wide; beautiful beaches, amazing wildlife and a laidback way of life almost guarantee you will spend longer here than you originally planned.

If your funds start running low you can use an Aussie working holiday visa to get a job and get saving for that next adventure. Ask any of our consultants for more advice on how to make the most of your time here – they’ve all travelled to Australia and many have worked there too.

Group tours

We offer a wide range of tours in every country and below, we’ve chosen some of the group tours we think are best-suited to backpackers. These include some ‘YOLO’ tours from G Adventures (aimed at 18-35 year olds), plus a range of great value group tours that suit the young at heart and those travelling on a budget.

For more advice, see our blog post 10 reasons to try a group tour. Remember, tours are great value because they include:

  • All accommodation
  • All local transports
  • Some meals
  • Some extras like national park entrance fees or local activities

Small group adventures

A great suggestion for Australia is to take your time exploring independently, then join a small group tour to discover the key highlights. Why not self-drive with a budget Aussie campervan or book a Greyhound Pass to take care of your transport, then we can book some small group adventures as open dated (pre-paid but you can start them at any time)? This way you know everything is paid for but you have the flexibility to choose when you join your trip.

Staying in budget and backpacker accommodation is a great way to meet other travellers. We can suggest good quality hostel accommodation in Australia where you will find safe, clean and budget friendly options to suit you.

We also offer pre-paid hostel passes which are valid in many destinations, so you can pay in advance but maintain the flexibility to stay where you want and choose you route as you go. By buying hostel nights in bulk saves you money and helps you budget upfront.

Base Hostels can be found in many cities including Brisbane, Airlie Beach, Sydney and Melbourne. As an international brand, you’re guaranteed clean, safe accommodation with a fun vibe. Base hostels are known for their great bars and social scenes, so they make a great option for those wanting to meet new people.

Nomads Bed Hopper passes are another flexible option. The great benefit about Nomads passes is that they can be used in more than one country, so if you are visiting Australia, New Zealand & Thailand you can use this pass everywhere you go. Again, as an international brand, you can be confident that these hostels will be safe and clean.

Getting around Australia on a shoestring

Hop-on/hop-off bus passes are a cheap, flexible and sociable option for backpackers and those on a budget. We offer some great deals on these passes in many different locations. If you’d prefer to drive yourself, a budget campervan can be a brilliant way to get around. The basic models can sleep a couple of people in reasonable comfort.

Greyhound offer a hop-on/hop-off bus pass along the east coast of Australia that allows you to pay up front for an entire route (eg Sydney to Cairns) with unlimited stops in between. These passes can range from 3 to 6 months and can even be bought in kilometres if you are planning on back-tracking rather than heading in the same direction continually. You can book travel online as you go for complete flexibility.

Loka offer a more inclusive touring experience, using a combination of Loka’s own buses and trains. With these passes, you’ll have a guide in each location and some local experiences are included in the pass.

Loka have partnerships with local businesses and offer unique experiences like surf camps and country camping for an additional charge. They also offer discounted prices for hostel stays.
