Bolivia as part of a Round the World Trip

Around the world trip starts in Delhi

Mountains, lakes, salt flats and jungles – Bolivia has it all. It's a great destination to explore during a Round the World trip or you can take more time and focus your travelling purely in South America. Here are a few hints to help you on your way.

— Take a jungle tour from Rurrenabaque and camp out under the stars, or swim with pink river dolphins in the lowland pampas.

— Explore the culturally diverse capital of La Paz, and enjoy trekking in the nearby mountain range of the Cordillera Real.

— Take a trip literally into the heart of the Andes when you venture down the silver mines at Potosi.

— Relax by the calm blue waters of Lake Titicaca and enjoy walking and biking from the small town of Copacabana.

— Journey through the huge salt flats of Uyuni by 4x4 jeep.

Climate in Bolivia

The whole country has two main seasons –dry (May to October) and rainy (November to April). In the rainy season road access to some areas may be cut off due to landslides. Temperatures at night during the dry season may be below freezing in high-altitude areas, but expect sunshine most days.

Visa information for Bolivia

UK Passport holders do not a visa in advance and will be given a 90 day tourist visa on arrival.

UK Passport holders will be granted a visa upon arrival. There is no fee and no need to apply for a visa in advance.

Health advice for Bolivia

To ensure that you stay healthy on your Round the World trip, avoid buying food from street vendors, peel raw fruit and vegetables, and only drink bottled water in all parts of the country. Yellow fever and malaria are problems in lowland areas, make sure you have the necessary vaccinations. When crossing from Bolivia into Brazil overland you will be asked to show your Yellow Fever certifícate. Altitude sickness can be a problem in Highland areas including La Paz, take time to acclimatize, eat lightly upon arrival and drink plenty of water and coca tea.

Getting around Bolivia

Buses run all over the country and provide a cheap means of transportation, although roads are not well maintained and local buses do not often have toilets. If you're travelling Round the World on a shoestring, the buses are definitely the best option. Domestic flights are more comfortable and can save a lot of time. A worthwhile train journey is the unfortunately named "Tren de la muerte", or Train of Death, which runs daily from Santa Cruz to Corumba in the Brazilian pantanal.
