Adventure Travel

Adventure tours refer to trips with companies like Dragoman, Exodus, Imaginative Traveller, Intrepid, GAP, Oasis and Kumuka (to name but a few).

They involve overland adventure travel with a group of people, usually 10 - 18 led by an experienced guide or leader who will know the area intimately. Sometimes there will also be additional help in the form of a driver and / or cook. Some of these trips will use their own transport, like specially converted Mercedes trucks. In places like Africa and South America, overland adventure travel gives you the independence to access remote areas. On other trips, an imaginative selection of locally organised transport will be used. Accommodation, as an inclusive part of your overland adventure travel, will vary from all camping to all small hotels / pensions or a mixture of the two.

Advantages of overland adventure travel

  • You get to go to places that would otherwise be very expensive or inaccessible. This is especially true of overland adventure travel in Africa and South America where if you want to get into the bush / wilderness / mountains / deserts / rainforests and encounter wildlife in its natural habitat, you would really struggle with public transport.
  • You get to see more. If your time is limited, these trips are an efficient way to see a region as the red-tape and leg work is taken care of.
  • Overland adventure travel as part of a group is much more sociable alternative to travelling alone.
  • You eat very well. When you are camping, food is purchased locally and prepared by the group (in Africa and South America you will find out why you can’t think of any Tanzanian or Bolivian restaurants at home...). When you are eating in local eateries, your guide will probably point you in the right direction.
  • Safety and security. You and your possessions are much less of a target for criminals if you are part of a overland adventure travel group. Similarly, if you become ill or are injured, you will have the immediate help of your group.
  • You don’t have to endure public transport which, in most of the developing world is dangerous, overcrowded and very uncomfortable - especially if you happen to be over 5 ft 1in tall !
  • You can budget with overland adventure travel more easily. Once you have paid for your trip and the food kitty, you only really need money for beer and odd personal items.
